Dejan Stanković was born on September 11, 1978 in Zemun. At the age of 14, he joined the Red Star Belgrade Youth School, developing into a great player in the cadet and youth teams of our club, under the professional guidance of Vladimir Petrović Pižon.
He joined the senior team at the age of 16 in the 1994/1995 season under coach Ljubomir Ljupko Petrović. He made his debut for Red Star in a friendly match against Olympiacos, and his official debut came against OFK Belgrade, in which he Crvena Zvezda won 2:1. He scored his first goal in the red and white jersey in 1995 against Budućnost from Podgorica, breaking the then record of Dragan Džajić, who was the youngest scorer in the club's history until then. Stanković won the double crown with Red Star that season, and in 1997 he became the youngest captain of Red Star and the best player in the domestic championship.
He played 148 games for Red Star Belgrade, including friendlies. A total of 114 official games for the red and whites, in which he scored 38 goals.
He played 103 matches for our country's national team and scored 15 goals. He participated in the World Championships in 1998, 2006 and 2010 and the European Championship in 2000.
Dejan Stanković also built his career through major Italian clubs. From Red Star, he continued his career with Lazio, where he played over 200 games, won the championship and two cups. After six years spent in the ranks of the sky-blue team, in 2004 he moved to Inter, where he spent the best years of his career. He was the champion of the Italian Serie A five times, with four cups, and also won the Champions League in 2010 under the coaching baton of José Mourinho. He played 326 games for Inter and scored 42 goals. After nine years spent at Inter, Stanković ended his professional career in 2013.
Dejan Stanković first took over at Red Star Belgrade in December 2019 and remained on the club's bench until August 2022, achieving extremely notable results. During his first term as head coach of the red-and-whites, he won three Serbian championship titles and two national cups.
Under the leadership of Dejan Stanković, Crvena Zvezda has also achieved significant success on the international stage. Our club has won three consecutive participations in the group stage of the Europa League, as well as two places in the knockout stage of the European competition. In the 2020/21 season, the red and whites qualified for the round of 32, while a year later they won first place in the group and directly qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League. Before the end of his first term on the red and whites' bench, Stanković secured another place in the group stage of the Europa League in the 2022/23 season.
After leaving Red Star, Dejan Stanković served as head coach of Sampdoria, Ferencváros and Spartak Moscow. In December 2025, he returned to Red Star, to his club and the environment in which he achieved his greatest coaching successes, with the aim of continuing successful cooperation and new sporting achievements.
