Three rounds before the end of the Serbian and Montenegrin championship in the 2006/07 season, Crvena zvezda became the champion. With goals from Dušan Djokić (35th and 79th minute), the red and whites defeated OFK Beograd (2:0) and won their 25th championship title. Zvezda had nine points more than Partizan, who had a better head-to-head record, so they theoretically secured first place even then.
Previously, in the 126th eternal derby at the Partizan stadium, there were no goals, so Crvena zvezda six rounds before the end of the championship, they maintained a large lead of seven points, which is how much is left until the end ( Crvena zvezda 78, Partizan 71). In that derby, the bench of the eternals was filled with foreigners: Italian Walter Zenga successfully led Zvezda to its 25th championship title, while German Jürgen Reber did not fare well in Partizan. The match in Humska ended without a winner and no goals, but Zenga left the Partizan stadium in triumph. Therefore, the red and whites did not regret much that they did not take advantage of several excellent opportunities, because in the end they got a sweeter point.

At the grand celebration of the title, coach Walter Zenga was greeted with thunderous applause from 30,000 fans at Marakana, during the match against Vojvodina. Of the players, who changed their image just for the occasion (dyed their hair red and white), the biggest ovations went to striker Nikola Žigić, captain Nenad Kovačević and defender Dušan Basta. The celebration was marked by a huge fireworks display and the 15th victory on home soil: Crvena zvezda - Vojvodina 3:1.
- The cup is heavy, but I like its weight. Last year with Steaua I didn't feel like lifting the trophy, then the players wore jerseys with my name on them, which is a great satisfaction for me. We achieved our goal before this match, which was to win the 15th match in order to finish the championship with maximum effect on home soil. The players are aware that they have entered the history of the club. I am glad that I managed to change their mentality, that is, to instill in them that the interest of the team is greater than the interest of the individual - Zenga beamed with satisfaction.
