Crvena zvezda won its 12th Yugoslav championship title in the 1972/73 season. Two rounds before the end of the championship on June 10, 1973, the red and whites mathematically secured first place. The jubilee 50th Yugoslav championship continued the dominance of our most trophy-winning club.

It was the 14th trophy of the then most successful generation of Crvena zvezda, not only in the history of the red and white club, but also in the entire history of Yugoslav football up to that point. In the championship race, Miljan Miljanić's squad, as many times before, proved that our team is the most complete. In addition to one of the strongest defenses, Zvezda had the most deadly attack. Offensiveness was at the core of the game's philosophy. Only three defeats throughout the entire championship and the most victories on away grounds.
Crvena zvezda : Zoran Antonijević 4, Jovan Aćimović 28-3, Zoran Bingulac 1, Vladislav Bogićević 32-1, Kiro Dojčinovski 28, Ratomir Dujković 8-5 goals conceded, Milovan Djorić 11, Slobodan Janković 17-3, Živorad Jevtić 2, Nikola Jovanović 12, Stanislav Karasi 32-17, Mihalj Keri 29, Branko Klenkovski 3, Petar Krivokuća 26-3, Vojin Lazarević 34-25, Dušan Nikolić 5, Mile Novković 14, Miroslav Pavlović 33, Aleksandar Panajotović 7, Vladimir Petrović 31-7, Ognjen Petrović 27-23 goals conceded, Sead Sušić 2, Zoran Filipović 17-5, Dragan Džajić 22-9.
Coach: Miljan Miljanić.
The great triumph turned into a real feat, if you look at the misfortunes that followed the red and white team throughout the championship. Rarely has a team, especially a championship team, been so decimated by injuries. Regularly or occasionally, as many as eight players from the famous championship generation were absent, including Antonijević (who went to the Yugoslav People's Army), Krivokuća, Džajić, Janković, Aćimović (severe injuries), Dujković, Djorić (loss of form) and Filipović. Players with less playing time experienced lightning-fast affirmation, namely Olja and Vladimir Petrović, Keri, Jovanović, Nikolić, Panajotović.
Miljan Miljanić, as the head of the coaching staff, was the root of the success and certainly one of the most deserving for the new title. The most outstanding players on the field were the seasoned veterans Pavlović, Dojčinovki, Džajić, Krivokuća, Aćimović, who once again held all the strings in their hands. To them should be added the newly-minted national team players Ognjen Petrović, Bogićević and Karasi, or the extraordinary Keri, as well as the greatest revelation of the Crvena zvezda football school - Vladimir Petrović Pižon. The final balance of Zvezda was 52 points, 21 wins, 10 draws, three losses and a goal difference of 71:28.
