On a day we celebrated winning the Superliga, we also celebrated the career of the man who lifted the trophy, our Club Captain Nenad Milijaš.
After 18 years of playing football professionally, after many stellar moments, after all the joy he brought us in his three spells playing for the club, Nenad Milijaš decided it was enough.
Milijaš received a framed shirt with his name and number 250, the number of appearances he exceeded in the past month. He was honoured by the legendary Vladimir Petrović Pižon, a man who had spent 50 years at the club in various roles.
Nenad Milijaš showed many times that he’s red and white through and through. He gave so much to the club and will be remembered forever here.
“It was an enjoyable day. We celebrated the title with the fans and our families. I’m grateful to my team-mates and everyone at the club. It’s been an emotional day, but we aren’t quite done yet – we’ve still got a Cup final to tackle!”
Captain was replaced after 64 minutes of our win over Napredak and he ran a lap of honour after coming off. As he waved and applauded the fans, he was treated to choruses of ‘There’s only one Nenad Milijaš’.
“I thank them all for being there. I would have loved to just go and say thank you to every single fan individually. They deserve it – and they deserve even more.”
Nenad Milijaš finishes his career as 15th in Crvena zvezda all-time appearances charts. He is now the only red and white to have won five league titles since the Club’s historic European Cup win in 1991. He had made his first debut for the club on 18th February 2006 in a 2-0 win at Voždovac. He scored his first Zvezda goal on 11th March 2006 in an 1-0 victory over Rad.
