Even though it took both teams a long time to produce a goalscoring chance, the match at ČSK Pivara was all action with the hosts looking to compete against the champions of Serbia. Zvezda went close on half-hour as John Jairo Ruiz’s deflected free kick looked destined to beat Tankosić, but the ČSK goalkeeper did well to recover and make a save.
But two minutes later the red-and-whites finally took the lead. A Srđan Plavšić cross was headed short by the home defenders and the ball fell nicely for Marko Poletanović who took a touch before planting a low shot beyond Tankosić.
Zvezda had a great chance to double the lead after Kerkez handled the ball in his box. Referee Vasić pointed to the spot, but captain Luković’s penalty was saved well.
Both teams had chances after the break, but Zvezda’s lead never looked in danger. The hosts tried to reach Manojlović’s net though counter-attacks, but they lacked the final ball and were unable to produce a shooting opportunity.
The Belgrade side looked more dangerous as the match wore on and were on target twice in space of nine minutes. Aleksandar Luković made amends for the missed penalty as he hit a great free kick from the left-hand side to give Zvezda a decisive two-goal cushion.
Miodrag Božović brought Srnić, Sikimić and Račić on and it was Predrag Sikimić who converted a chance on 83 minutes after Račić and Plavšić combined well.
There was a late chance for a consolation goal, but Manojlović did well to deny Furtula.
It was the last chance of the match which ended in 3-0 victory for Crvena zvezda, who remain in the chase for the Serbian Cup.
